Marvel-ous News Update

Posted on April 21, 2009 in: Comics, Movies

First up, more information is emerging from the set of Iron Man 2:

Iron Man

Things are moving pretty fast in the world of Iron Man 2, Jon Favreau has been feverishly twittering from the set about all things Iron Man 2, including a sneaky hint that Iron Man 2 footage will be premiered at Comicon, as per the previous film:

Just got out of a pre-call marketing meeting discussing Comicon. On set getting ready to shoot as Happy.

Whilst Robert Downey Jr. took time out to talk to MTV. Discussing the recent photos that emerged of Garry Shandling on the Iron Man 2 set:

Day one I’m doing a Senate hearing where the government is saying the Iron Man tech needs to be turned over to the Senator and the Senator is Gary Shandling, and we had this fantastic day that was somehow this controlled chaos of a Senate hearing where I keep interrupting them and dah dah dah.

About the motivations behind his character, Tony Stark:

The set pieces have to do with things that aren’t your typical, like, bad guy conflict. The relationships are very complex and hilarious. The motivations Tony has and why he turns around and does things has completely to do with his own internal processes and it really is, I think, as much as we tried to in the first one really see behind the façade of this kind of storytelling. We really, I think, leaving ourselves open to…we’re kind of trying to tell a story about how a dysfunctional family saves life on Earth as we know it.

And talking about Mickey Rourke as Iron Man 2’s villain:

I’ve seen his stuff and it is literally remarkable. Literally remarkable. He’s so good. And he’s formidable and he’s very much reminding me of that kind of charming, confident guy that we know.

Thor

In other Marvel news, Kenneth Branagh’s Thor movie is still in the casting stage, with alot of sites reporting that Alexander Skarsard, who’s previous acting efforts include the HBO series True Blood, is set to play the titular role of Thor. However, according to reports, E-Online asked Skarsard about being cast as Thor, to which he replied:

No, I don’t think so. I haven’t gotten the call, so…

So who knows what happening with Thor. Many claimed Alexander Skarsard was a shoe-in for the role as he fits Marvel’s key criteria of looking like Thor, standing over 6ft tall and being in his 20’s. If you don’t know what he looks like, check out this photo. This news might not mean he isn’t playing Thor: like with previous Marvel films, there’s always smoke-and-mirrors to any casting news…
