If you didn’t already know, Tobey MacGuire is developing a live-action version of the classic 80’s anime Robotech (aka Macross). The film has been in development for 2 years so far, and has gone through 2 script writers – previous drafts have been written by Lawrence Kasdan, and the team of Alfred Gough & Miles Millar. As well as producing Robotech alongside Akiva Goldsman, Charles Roven and Jason Netter, Tobey MacGuire is also said to be lined up for a starring role in the movie.
Now news of a third script comission has been announced, this time by novelist and UK television writer Tom Rob Smith. Smith started out working on the UK soap opera Family Affairs and the trashy female prison drama Bad Girls. He has also written the highly acclaimed novel Child 44 – which was the subject of a bidding war at the London Book Fair. The rights for Child 44, the story of a child-murdering serial killer in Stalinist Russia, have been optioned by director Ridley Scott as a future directorial project.
