Following  a good couple of weeks, this fortnight sees a mixed bag… First up, the must buys:

MUST BUYS
Avengers: The Initiative #26
Blackest Night #1
Captain Britain and MI13 #15
Deadpool #12
Deadpool: Suicide Kings #4
Freddy vs Jason vs Ash: Nightmare Warriors #2

This weeks two issues of Deadpool yet again blow everything else out of the water. As far as I’m concerned his current Marvel run (all three titles) are the best comics on the market today – they strike a perfect blend between story, action and twisted humour. Avengers: The Initiative #26 is raised into must-buy territory merely on the appearance of the new New Warriors; whilst the recent New Warriors series tapered off towards the end of it’s run, I enjoyed the ride and I think this new band of warriors may breathe life into the name New Warriors once more. Blackest Night #1 features some amazing artwork in a story of life, death and the Green Lantern Corps, I get the feeling this may well end up becoming DC’s version of “Marvel Zombies,” albeit a much better story of dead superheroes… Captain Britain and MI13 #15 ends the series on a high, with Dracula and his vampire army defeated and Cap reunited with his wife. Paul Cornell needs to be given free reign to bring back more neglected superheroes given his excellent work on this title, and any comic that features 3 of the best Marvel UK characters, Digitek, Captain Britain and Death’s Head, has to get my vote as book of the week! Freddy vs Jason vs Ash: Nightmare Warriors #2 very nearly wasn’t a must buy this week despite the fact that Fred Krueger is resurrected as a human sans evil powers, that was until the final page of the book and the return of everyone’s favourite Jason Vorhees adversary: Tommy Jarvis!

THE REST
Dark X-Men: The Beginning #1
Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #2
Buck Rogers #2
The Mighty Avengers #27

Despite the hype, Dark X-Men #1 didn’t appeal – in a three strand story we are introduced to 3 members of Osborn’s new X-Men line-up. Sadly the whole issue feels unfinished, I would have preferred a more protracted introduction of the Dark X-Men but given that this is a three issue mini-series there’s no much room for storytelling. Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #2 was a disappointment following the amazing first issue, I have a feeling we will see a much more battle hardened Bill following this mini series and I’m not too keen on the path his character is taking. Perhaps the final issue will turn things around. Buck Rogers #2 is just slow, with a padded storyline and too much exposition, this was a hard slog to read. As for this months The Mighty Avengers #27, it was a confusing mess. With half the issue introducing us to the king of the Inhumans and the other half showing off the new “Infinite Avengers Mansion” there was no time for a coherent story, but the cliffhanger ending does give me hope for next months issue.
