Spiderman 3 may have been the most disappointing film in the Marvel/Sony franchise, however it did introduce Spider-Man’s arch nemesis Venom to the (wider) world. A long-time fan favourite in the comics, many thought his first big-screen outing was a bit of let down. So when Sony talked of bringing back Venom for his own movie, the news got many fans worried – would Sony do right by the character this time or would they yet go down the Spidey3 root yet again?
That question still remains to be answered, but one piece of good news surrounding the film, is that the co-writers of Zombieland, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have together been working on a new version of Venom for Sony. In an interview with Sci-Fi Wire the duo revealed they had turned in their scripts to Sony:
We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward. We’re not sure, [when it will go into production] but we’ve turned in our two drafts.
Whether Venom will shoot before the proposed Spiderman 4 remains to be seen, but with a rumoured start date of early 2010 could Spiderman 4 have a bearing on any new Venom movie? Wernick was tight-lipped:
We can’t really talk about that, unfortunately. Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what’s the next step.
As Sony seems to enjoy throwing as many villians into the mix as possible, I wonder if the Venom movie will also feature Anti-Venom and Carnage? Who knows!
