Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has revealed new details about the PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service, which launches next month. The service, which was officially announced at Gamescom in August, will allow PS3 and PSP owners to download a range of new movies to their devices.
Launching in the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November, it will host content to buy or rent from 20th Century Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Starz Media, Universal and Warner Bros. SCEE also plans to announce additional deals with regional studios closer to the service launch, such as Universum Film and Constantin Film in Germany.
This news follows hot on the heels of the announcement that Netflix is to launch it’s online streaming service in the US next month. In a statement SCEA president and chief executive Jack Tretton said:
The PS3 has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows. Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.
The PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service marks Europes entry into the online video streaming service some 15 months after the service launched in the US. There are currently no plans for the Netflix service to be launched in Europe…
