THR’s Heat Vision are reporting that Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play Thor’s father and ruler of Asgard – the Norse god Odin, in Marvel Studios’ big-screen adaptation of Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh.
It was previously rumoured that Brian Blessed was up for the role, however that what quite some time ago and things change – plus Blessed would be more suited to playing Volstagg of the Warriors Three wouldn’t he?
We also finally have news on the plot of the film, which sees:
…the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
I think Hopkins could be a good choice for Odin – he has the “Shakesperian” acting chops needed for the role and as we saw in Hannibal he can also ham up when he needs to. The perfect combination… Thor is set to lens in the new year, for a 2011 release date.
