Play.com have pre-order listings for two limited edition releases of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen and Star Trek. Entitled Movie On 4GB USB Stick (clunky or what), these USB Sticks are fashioned after the iconic emblems of both franchises. According to the listings blurb:

Now you can take this explosive new movie with you wherever you go in this handy USB stick! Up to five devices can be registered to play this digital copy, and there’s plenty of space left over for files, photos, or whatever you need to take with you.

Why? Why? Why? I thought the idea of putting movies on USB sticks would die out after Intergral and PNY managed to not set the high street alight with their USB Flash Drive movie releases – how many of you saw those in the bargain bins recently in Gamestation for less than a fiver? I know I did.. And the fact they are still trying to offload them a year after they were originally released says a LOT.

I’m guessing like those releases, Transformers 2 and Star Trek will be heavily DRM’d so much so that the stick HAS to be present for you to play the movie – even if you copy it to your PC or Mac! The (really limited) specifications of the” Movies on a Stick” include:

  • Film supplied on a 4GB USB stick, of which about 1GB is taken up by the film
  • Collectable item – individually numbered
  • One off print run
  • DIVX certified DRM, compatible with PC or MAC OS
  • Up to 5 device licenses
  • Option to burn to DVD
  • Unlimited viewing on registered devices

Star Trek Movie On 4GB USB Stick is released November 16th, whilst the Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Movie On 4GB USB Stick is set for a November 30th release.
