This month’ Empire features Iron Man on the cover and a feature on the upcoming sequel inside. However that is not the most intersting part of the magazine… Tucked away in an interview with the actor Jeremy Renner is news that he is being considered for a role in Marvel’s The Avengers as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye.

The main Avengers cast is pretty much set in stone already: Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Add to that whomever Marvel cast as Captain America and you’ve pretty much got a full-line up there, apart from Hawkeye – who has been a key member of The Avengers since the ’60s.

In the interview with Renner, Empire asked about the actors prospects of playing the legendary Steve Rogers, aka Captain America it was during this question that Renner dropped the bombshell regarding Hawkeye:

I don’t know if I’d be right for Captain America, I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn’t talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we’ve become friends over time and he was thinking maybe Hawkeye could be interesting. He sounds like an interesting character.

But Empire’s conversation with Renner revealed that Hawkeye may be taking the Nick Fury route into The Avengers – cropping up in a cameo in Thor or The First Avenger: Captain America. Says Renner:

If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers. But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.

Nothing is set in stone however, and Marvel has made not definite offer to Renner, so for now everything is mere speculation. For more from Renner pick up the new issue of Empire, which is out now.
