The Transformers franchise has been in existence for 25 years now and despite the franchises many successes (TV, movies, toys) there has never been as much effort put into Transformers videogames. That’s not to say there hasn’t been a huge number of Transformers games over the years: Transformers (C64/Spectrum), Transformers: Beast Wars (PSOne, N64 and PC), as well as the handful of games that never made it out of Japan including: Transformers: Convoy No Nazo (Famicom/NES), Transformers: Headmasters (Famicom Disc System) Transformers: Tataki (PS2); plus there’s also the recent movie adaptations released worldwide…

The only real challenger for the title of GOOD Transformers videogame translation is Transformers, the Playstation 2 videogame released in 2004 which was based on the Transformers: Armada cartoon that was airing at the time. However there may be a new contender for the crown when Transformers: War for Cybertron is released, just check out the amazing looking preview video courtesy of GameTrailers:

Yes, the game looks to be based on what many have called the worst cartoon in Transformers long-running history, Transformers: Cybertron, however we can’t judge a book (or game) by it’s history – you only need to look at the PS2 Transformers game to see that, plus that series, despite its many shortcomings, did have some superb character designs.

Transformers: War for Cybertron takes place before the Transformers had any contact at all with Earth, and lets players partake in the life-long battle between the Autobots and Decepticons back on planet Cybertron. The game is in development by High Moon Studios, best known for both the The Bourne Conspiracy and Darkwatch

Transformers: War for Cybertron will be released on PC, Xbox360 and Playstation 3. There’s no set release date as of yet, however expect it next year…
