Screen Daily are reporting that Sony Pictures Entertainment is about to close a deal to option English-language remake rights to the Millennium Series, based on Swedish writer Stieg Larsson’s crime novels.

Scott Rudin, who secured the remake rights, is attached to produce alongside Ole Sondberg and Soren Staermose of Yellow Bird Films, the company behind the original Swedish films.

The first film in the series is the smash hit The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which grossed more than $100m in Europe and had it’s UK premiere at this years London Film4 FrightFest.

The next two entries in the Millenium trilogy, which centres on the unique crime-solving pair Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist and investigator, and Lisbeth Salander, a punk computer hacker with a photographic memory, are The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

Music Box Films has slated a North American release of the original Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in March 2010. If the film proves to be a success in the US, it’s likely the next two films will be picked up and released across the rest of the year.
