
Variety are reporting that actress Rene Russo has signed on as the mother of the titular hammer-wielding Norse hero in Marvel Studios big screen adaptation of Thor.
Russo has been cast as Frigga, the queen of Asgard and the wife of Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Frigga is also mother to both Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and his nemesis Loki (Tom Hiddleston). The film follows:
…the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Russo joins an ever-expanding cast which already includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba and Kat Dennings.
Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, hits cinemas May 20th, 2011.
