LEGO Universe is an upcoming massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) developed by NetDevil planned to be released in the second half of 2010. According to reports:

LEGO Universe will be co-operatively played with others to accomplish in-game tasks rather than player versus player gameplay and each player’s account will be linked to their ‘My Lego Network’ account, where awards, equipment and player achievements will be showcased. The currency of the game will be plastic, which can be used to buy LEGO bricks.

The gameplay itself has been described as similar to that of LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game and LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. It has been confirmed that there will be several worlds, between which the main method of travel will be a rocket ship the player builds. There will be three building modes: Quick Building, where you automatically construct a predetermined model, Choice Building, where you choose from a selection of modular chunks of bricks to arrange, and Custom Building, where you have complete creative control of the model. Players will have the option of making their creation smashable or not.

There will be two types of competitions: Player vs. Environment and Player vs. Player. Player vs. Environment will allow you to battle creatures and explore the environment, while Player vs. Player will put you against you self or others in intense games of skill.

Much like other online MMOG’s access to LEGO Universe will be based on a monthly subscription model. The game was recently showcased at CES, and a trailer was released online – featuring of all things – LEGO zombies and LEGO ninjas!! (Why aren’t there actual LEGO Zombie and Ninja mini-figs available to buy?):

From the trailer it looks like LEGO Universe could be a hell of a lot of fun. For more info, check out the official LEGO Universe website
