A few weeks ago, Ghostbusters writer and star Harold Ramis speculated that the long-awaited third movie in the series is planned for a 2011 release. Then actress Sigourney Weaver was asked during press for Avatar whether she had heard of any plans for a sequel – to which she speculated on a ghostly Bill Murray and her characters son, Oscar, from Ghostbusters 2 being all grown up and a member of the Ghostbusters team.
Now MTV have managed to track down director Ivan Reitman to ask him about the possibility of a Ghostbusters 3… And the result? Good news all round!
Reitman said that the script from Year One writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky is in and that a second draft is currently in the works. He also confirmed that he will indeed be returning to direct the forthcoming sequel! Says Reitman:
They have delivered a draft. We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed. I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney [Weaver] may or may not have said… There’s some very cool things in the new draft, let’s just put it that way.
As for a release date, all Reitman would say is: “I hope to start shooting in this next year,” Then when MTV asked if he would be returning to direct Ghostbusters 3, Reitman gave a simple one-word answer: “Yes”.
So that’s it. The news we have all been waiting for. There IS to be a Ghostbusters 3. And with a start date this year, a 2011 release looks likely… Now the question is can they get all the cast together?
