In what may well be the strangest story of the day, THR’s Live Feed are reporting that comedian Patton Oswalt (Reno 911, United States of Tara) has written a new comic book based on the Joss Whedon TV series Firefly. According to reports Oswalt’s book is titled Serenity: Float Out, and takes place after the 2005 film version of the series, Serenity and focuses on the aftermath of the death of the ship’s pilot, Wash. Oswalt told MTV:
Post-’Serenity,’ a bunch of Wash’s friends who we haven’t met on the show, they’re basically buying a new ship and christening it. It’s called a ‘float-out’ when you christen a ship … As they’re christening a new ship, they’re telling stories about Wash, and we’re basically seeing what could be the start of a new adventure … It’s a tiny little chapter, but it’s very flattering.
Actually this story is not that strange, Patton Oswalt has appeared in numerous sci-fi shows over the years, including Caprica and Joss Whedon’s other cancelled Fox show Dollhouse, he’s even lent his voice to DC’s The Batman cartoon! Looking at his IMDB page you can see the comedian/actor obviously has an affinity for the genre so writing a comic does seem less of a stretch…
Serenity: Float Out features art by Patric Reynolds and a cover (pictured above) by Jo Chen. The book will be released June 2nd 2010 from Dark Horse Comics.
